La Rochelle is a coastal city in southwestern France and capital of the Charente-Maritime department. It's been a center for fishing and trade since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that's reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbor) and huge, modern Les Minimes marina. The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including passageways covered by 17th-century arches.

NANTES
The city owes its development to its location on the banks of the Loire. After having been an important port site of the age of metals, it became the capital of the Gallo-Roman city of Namnetes, the seat of a bishopric in the 5th century, then the chief town of a Franc county, illustrated by the semi-legendary personality of Roland.

The Mervent Zoo was created in 1959 by Paul Besson, now deceased. We could then see animals from the European fauna (fallow deer, wolves), but also some exotic animals (a couple of lions, a collared bear, primates…). Its exploitation ended in October 1998.
The park reopened in April 2002 after three years of long and painstaking work. It is then a new zoo, completely overhauled and transformed which is managed by Mr Royer and Patricia Arnal.
